For many owners, a pet is more than just an animal, with the thought of little Fido's ashes being thrown into a landfill too much to bear and fuelling a surge in demand for pet urns.
Since backyard burials are forbidden in many U.S. markets and are logistically impossible for urban apartment dwellers, cremation is the only means of disposal for many. Owners of pets who die at animal hospitals are incinerated along with other animals and their remains disposed of at a local landfill or rendering plant. If the owner wants the remains back, the animal is cremated individually.
The practice of memorializing pets dates back thousands of years, all the way to the ancient Egyptians, said Stephen Zawistowski, a historian at the ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals)."If you were an ancient Egyptian, you would've shaved your eyebrows as a form of mourning for your dead cat," he said. "In the pyramids they found thousands of embalmed cats - cat mummies," said Zawistowski."There is evidence going back 6,000 to 10,000 years of people burying their pets," Zawistowski said.
